Upper Michigan (Mackinac Island)

Hello Welcome back!, In this week's blog, I will continue my trip in upper Michigan. After spending a lot of time walking on the hot burning sand dune, I finally get to spend some time in somewhere else…...on the Island. Yes, that sound so much different the beaches I tried to get to on the first day but trust me the island is worth to go to.

Started by driving to the harbor to buy a ferry ticket. We went there pretty early in the morning because we will be spending a lot of time in there. Normally, when you go to the island, you will be able to take your car with you if you want. But this island, the car is prohibited. The only transportation available is carriage in which I will talk about later.

While we were waiting for the ferry to arrive I walked around the port and took some picture. It was a nice morning with much colder temperature than yesterday. It is weird I know, one day is hot and tomorrow cold. Welcome to Michigan, a land of weird weather.

It took about 30 minutes to get from the port to the island, but don’t worry it is not boring at all since you can enjoy the view of the Mackinac Bridge and the island itself from afar.

When you arrive at the island first thing you will see is carriage since it is the only transportation on this island. Just be careful with the horse poop on the street. We walked to visit the grand hotel but we didn’t actually get in there because it is very expensive. So I just walked pass and took some picture.

You can enjoy the tour of the old town and houses on the island. Every building on the island is antique to keep the vintage atmosphere. There is a free carriage to take you to the highest point of the island to see the view of “Arch Rock” as you can see in the picture. And if you look down the beach below, you can join paddle-boarding, kayaking or canoeing in that area.

After I finished sightseeing the island, I went back to the main town to buy some souvenir. My favorite thing to buy here is fudge. It is so delicious and each of the stores offer various of flavor to choose. Some of the stores will make it in front of the counter and serve in the box for you right away so it is very fresh. I ended up bought 2 boxes of pure chocolate fudges and 2 of caramel.

At 1 pm, we went back to the mainland and drove to the lighthouse and shipwreck museum. It is not much there but there is some nice view to take a picture. The museum is kind of cool to visit if you are into the history of the ship and trading in the past. Not only that ,they also consist of old equipment of the submarine.

In the end of the day, we stopped at the car park spot near the Mackinac Bridge to enjoy the last view of the lake before going back to lower Michigan. It was a long day, but it was very fun. I suggest if you have a chance to go to Michigan, please go to visit the Upper part. It is full of beautiful natural views and if you are lucky enough you might be able to see wild bear, moose, or wolf which is unable to see in other part of Michigan. Trust me it will be worth!
