In this week blog, I will be talking about photography on a level that everyone can be related to. My topic is “Mobile Photography”. As the name suggested, It’s basically taking a photo by using a mobile phone. It is perhaps what we do most often on our phone nowadays, even more than calling perhaps. We literally take picture of everything whether a mountain, sky, a dog, a building or even food you are about to eat. We are all addicted to taking pictures.
The popularity of mobile photography didn’t come to exist until 2010, when one of the most popular social media apps launched, Instagram. It was one of the very first picture related social media app that allows users to share their photography skill. Back then everyone can be a photographer with a mobile phone and some creativity.

If you ask me why mobile photography become so popular after Instagram, I would say it is because people finally have their own place or channel to express themselves through photography. It is a friendly platform to users that allow everyone to become a photographer. There is no need for complicated equipment or time-consuming process in order to publish their favorite picture. Just shoot and upload, easy as that.
After everyone was familiar with mobile photography, the big trend that changed all of the easy features about mobile photography occurred and that trend is editing. Back when people don’t know much about editing, there were just a few filters that allow you to edit your pictures on Instagram. However, if we look at our Instagram now, there are a variety of different style of editing due to the popularity of editing apps like VSCO, snapseed or afterlight. Mobile photography is no longer just “shoot and upload” but instead, it’s all about making your picture look perfect. Here are some examples of Instagram before and after editing trend.
Not only the way people do mobile photography has changed but the purpose of it changed also. In the beginning of mobile photography, we take pictures just for our own satisfaction. It is just for personal purposes. However, when there is a large number of audience on photography related platform like Instagram, mobile photography turned into a business. Believe it or not, there are so many people on Instagram are able to create their own brand and make money out if it. This does not mean that they sell products on Instagram but just by living their normal life and take good pictures, they are able to make money out of it. Here are some of the Instagram account that is able to make money by sponsorship.
After seeing all those people above, I guess right now you probably wonder about creating your own artsy Instagram. But before doing so I want you to keep in mind that those people did not get 100k followers in one day and they do not just take picture randomly.Those images are full of style. So if you want to be like them you can try and do it together with me! Because in the end even if you don’t get a good feedback but you will definitely improve your photography skill for sure. And for the most important thing, you will get to do what you truly like and passionate about :)
