1. The naked gunner, 1944

This photo was taken by Horace Bristol during the rescue mission in Rabaul Bay. The photographer was assigned to documenting photo during the world war 2 and happened to be on the same plane of the gunner. This crewman of U.S. navy just jumped into the water to help the burnt marine pilot who was shot down by the Japanese soldier. After he rescued the pilot, he managed himself in the position of gunner without taking the time to put on his clothes. The reason why he took off his clothes is that he couldn’t swim very well with his boots and clothes on.

2. Marine boot camp hygiene inspection, 1951

This is a full body naked inspection for the recruits in Marine training camp. It was about 200 naked men were standing for the hygiene inspection. They had to line up and spin around so the commander could inspect them. They also got pesticide spray on them to keep them clean. The reason why this was done is because back then when the recruits would return their laundry, it would just all pile up together, so they would eventually got everyone else’s clothes. By checking everyone closely, it will reduce of spreading infections.

3. Mine worker x-rayed for diamond check, 1954

This is a picture of a radiologist who was performing an x-ray inspection of mine workers in Africa. It was done because many of mine workers usually tried to steal diamond by putting it in stomach, anus, month and so on. The machine is called fluoroscopy. It is used to see the real time movement of an interior of an object. It seemed to be a smart way to catch a thief, however, because of the machine use x-ray, it has some effect on the patient. The fluoroscopic procedure increases a risk of developing radiation-induced cancer. The longer the procedure is, the higher risk the patient gets

4. Miners washing each other’s backs in the showers, 1945

Back then it was a daily ritual of mine workers in Netherlands to wash each other’s back at the end of their shift. In the picture, you can see their smile and good spirit despite the hard work they just had. The coal dust produces greasy dirt on their body and it is quite difficult to clean if off completely by yourself. So that’s why mine workers needed a buddy to make sure that there is not a single spot of dirt to be missed. This picture can symbol trust between the workers.

5. The Kiss of Life, 1967

This is a picture of a worker named Thompson who was performing a month-to-month to Champion, Thompson’s co-worker after Champion passed out by contacted the voltage line. The safety strap prevented him from falling. The interesting thing in this picture is how Thompson was still able to perform CPR in such circumstance. Thompson performed CPR until he felt a slight pulse from Champion and put him on his back before they both went down to the ground. Champion survived and lived for the next 35 years. Thanks to Thompson!!
