Lightroom Editing part 1

Hello everyone, today I will demonstrate you about how to edit the picture by using lightroom and photoshop. This is the picture of the photoshoot I uploaded on this blog last week. As you can see, there is a big different in color and tone but I forgot to do a skin retouching. So in this week, I will show you the technique in skin retouching and color the picture.

Before starting, I would like to say that coloring picture is based on an individual's’ preferences. People like different colors. However, if we have a certain theme of the photoshoot in mind, choosing the right color could bring out the feeling and emotion in your picture.

There is actually two ways of editing a picture. You could either retouch the skin first, or you could adjust the color first. I personally prefer to coloring first in Lightroom and then switch to Photoshop to retouch the skin.

In lightroom, you will first start off by importing your picture and then you would go to develop section to start editing. Before do any color adjustment, you need to adjust the “basic” elements in a photo such as exposure, contrast, white, black, white, highlight, and etc. If you don’t know what those mean to you, you can just simply drag it around to experiment what it does on your picture. I like to use those tools to fix the overexposure and overshadow in a picture, so the photo doesn’t look too bright or too dark. I usually aim to bring some detail back in the area where it’s too bright or too dark.

After when you get the result that you want, you would want to go to curve section. With curve section, you can choose the area of the picture where you want to adjust contrast and the brightness in that part. For example, if you click on the dark part and drag down a little bit, the area that has the same dark tone in the picture will change. One thing you need to remember is that the curve adjustment can be very intense, just by move the curve a bit can dramatically change the picture.

Next, the HSL section, in this section you can choose the color that is in the picture to change. For example, if I want to choose the saturation of all the green part in a picture, I can simply do that by just drag it down. You can also play with the luminance and hue. Just remember that it will only change the color that is in your picture. One thing that you have to be careful is that if you choose to adjust the yellow and red, it could result in a weird skin color because these colors is a primary color of human’s skin.

Move on to the last part of this week post, split toning. As the name suggested, it will split the tone in a picture into two parts, shadow, and highlight. You can choose the color that you want to put in a highlight and shadow part and then use the bar in the middle to balance the color. I personally don’t use highlight that much because the most part of the picture is highlighted and when you choose to change the color in highlight part, it will look very unnatural.

Next week, we will talk about the skin retouching so please wait for it !!!
